ONLINE June 8, 2009 - What do a music video spoof, a satirical infomercial and a one-take wonder have in common? They’re all winners in the It’s Hilarious Too contest on SuperU.ca.
SuperU.ca is proud to announce “Tighty Whiteys Music Video” by Paul Thomas of Chicago is the $10,000 winner in the 2nd annual comedy video contest, It’s Hilarious Too. Thomas, a jackass of all comedy trades, also wins the opportunity to conquer Canada this summer with a screening at the Just For Laughs Film Festival and a chance for a broadcast on Super Channel.
The second prize of $5,000 goes to the Tenderloins Comedy Troupe, from New York, with “Time Thugs”, and PEI’s Jeremy Larter’s film “Roadside Assistance” wins the third prize of $2,500.
The inspiration for “Tighty Whiteys Music Video” came about 8 years ago. “Before the boxer-briefs became the undergarment of choice, I still wore the ol’ tighties for working out – never was a big fan of the jockstrap,” Thomas reminisces. The best part about making the music video, featuring nine men singing while clad in their favourite briefs, Thomas says, “is having an idea come out even better than you pictured it in your head.”
The Tenderloins, a handsome group of high school friends, have been filming sketch comedy together for about 10 years. “We love making fun of infomercials,” says member James Murray, “The format just begs for comedy.”
Jeremy Larter, born and raised in Prince Edward Island, says there is a strong filmmaking community there. “In the future,” Larter says, “I would like to continue making bigger and better films right here on the island.”
The jury was made up of Paul Ronca, Just for Laughs Film Festival Producer, stand-up comedian Robert Selander, and Greg Scarnici, king of online viral videos. The judges said, “The winning films showed that comedy continues to come in exciting, different, unexpected packages. SuperU is a great site to find quality films, easy to navigate, find what you want and connect with others!”
All three winners love SuperU.ca because they won money in the It’s Hilarious Too contest.
Paul Thomas is planning to support his comedy habit with his winnings. “When I bought my camera, I told my wife it was an investment, so it feels good to get a return on that,” he says.
The Tenderloins are torn about how to spend their prize money: “Hookers and Crack… or give it to charity.”
Jeremy Larter is taking a more practical route by continuing his weekly web series, paying his bills and his parents.
