ONLINE Dec. 3, 2008 - Super U is proud to announce "L'interprétation des rêves ou les aventures du Robot Bleu” by Elohim Sanchez has won $2,500 in the first SuperU.ca and TAC.tv Animation contest. The animated short, chosen by an expert panel of judges, will be featured on SuperU.ca and TAC.tv, and also have the chance to be broadcast on Super Channel.
Tackling animation for the first time, Elohim Sanchez is a film graduate of the University of Montreal. Short on cash, but not on inspiration, "L'interprétation des rêves ou les aventures du Robot Bleu” was born from a desire to create.
“I desperately wanted to make a short film, but I was working full-time and I had no money to spend on filmmaking. On the other hand my girlfriend makes a lot of puppets and our apartment is filled with them. I had to do something about it,” said Sanchez.
The jury, comprised of animation professionals David Fine and Alison Snowden (creators of the animated series “Bob and Margaret”), Kirby Morrow (voice actor, “Transformers”, “X-Men” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”) and Simon Parizeau (Studio Director at Salambo Productions), had nothing but praise for the winning film. “Our favourite was Robot Bleu. [It was] wonderfully crafted and designed and very original.”
"We were very impressed with the number and the quality of the entries for our first animation contest," said Michel Beaudet, creator TAC.tv and founder, Salambo Productions. "It shows how many young Canadians are embracing animation and the talent that is out there."
Sanchez plans to use his prize money to get started on a new film - with hopes of shooting in spring/summer 2009. “I’d like to write and direct personal films that, every year, get longer, more interesting and more complex.”
This marks the first of the quarterly animation contests presented by SuperU.ca and online animation heavy-hitter TAC.tv. Four times a year, the best animated shorts will win $2,500, be featured on TAC.tv and SuperU.ca and have a chance for broadcast on Super Channel. An elite jury, including Michel Beaudet, will be awarding a prize that could add another $5,000 for the best of the best at the end of 2009. The next contest opens to entrants on December 18, 2008.
